Introduction
The
Strategic Estates (SE) team is responsible for delivering a safe, comfortable, and efficient environment for Members of Parliament, their staff, and visitors. SE also manages the buildings, capital projects, and historic assets of the
Parliamentary Estate , which is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The
Heritage Collections Team (HCT) sits within SE and is responsible for three nationally significant collections: the
Architectural Fabric Collection, the Historic Furniture and Decorative Arts Collection, and the Parliamentary Art Collection . The team ensures the professional care, conservation, and interpretation of these collections, supporting the history and legacy of the Palace of Westminster.
The Role
We are looking for an
Assistant Curator to join the
Architectural Fabric Collection (AFC) team . This is an exciting opportunity to work within a small, dedicated team supporting the wider
Heritage Collections Team through a period of change and development.
The role will focus on
documentation, auditing, and engagement , ensuring the
Architectural Fabric Collection is accurately recorded and accessible for future use. You will play a key role in the
transition to a new Collections Management System and contribute to
storage improvements . There will also be opportunities to develop digital content, exhibitions, and engagement initiatives that highlight the significance of the collection.
Some of the responsibilities for this role include:
- Maintaining and enhancing collection documentation within the Collections Management System and hard copy records.
- Conducting audits and object movements, ensuring data accuracy and risk management.
- Collaborating with teams across Parliament, including Architecture & Conservation, Strategic Estates, and the Restoration & Renewal Programme.
- Assisting with the development of exhibitions and public engagement initiatives, including website and social media content.
- Overseeing photography and digital documentation of the collection.
Skills And Experience To be successful in this role, you will demonstrate:
- Experience working with museum or heritage collections, including documentation, audits, and research.
- A strong understanding of collections care and management, including cataloguing standards and Spectrum procedures.
- Experience in object handling, movement, and risk assessment for heritage assets.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly to a range of audiences.
- Strong organisational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
