Job Description

The Seneca Falls Historical Society seeks a motivated individual who is creative and team-oriented, with excellent interpersonal and organizational skills in working with co-workers and the public. The next assistant curator/education coordinator is an assertive individual with strong written and verbal communication skills for people of all ages. This person should have a bachelor’s or master’s degree in a museum- or library-related field, with previous museum or library experience and a passion for history.

As the Assistant Curator, you shall:

Be responsible for the documentation, interpretation, presentation, and exhibition of the various collections of the Seneca Falls Historical Society, including:

  • Accepting items donated to SFHS or otherwise acquired by SFHS and assessing them for possible accession into the collections;
  • Verifying the significance and appropriateness of accepted items in conjunction with the Collections Committee;
  • Accessioning any items formally accepted into the collections, placing them in the proper housing and storage, and cataloging them into the collections database;
  • Maintaining current SFHS collections items and collections areas by assessing storage and housing conditions and replacing housing and enclosures as needed;
  • Indexing collections boxes and collections items through proper archival arrangement and description and creating finding aids for individual collections;
  • Ensuring compliance with proper principles and practices for storage, housing, handling, and exhibition of collections items.

Be responsible for the care, maintenance, coordination, and administration of the library materials and library services at SFHS, including:

  • Organizing and maintaining all library resources and records for easy retrieval of information, ensuring materials are current, relevant, and accurate;
  • Possessing knowledge of types and locations of archival collections and library materials available for research and their appropriateness to specific requests.

Be responsible for the administration, coordination, and execution of research requests to SFHS and research visits to SFHS, including:

  • Maintaining and enforcing guidelines and procedures for handling and usage of collections items and research materials;
  • Assisting visitors in conducting research and locating appropriate resources;
  • Conducting research for patrons who do not physically visit SFHS collections;
  • Keeping records of research requests, including inquiries and invoices for fees.

As the Education Coordinator, you shall:

  • Be responsible for the administration, coordination, and execution of educational programs, for children and people of all ages, at the Society’s Museum, at schools, and at other venues;
  • Establish and maintain relationships with schools and other pertinent community and regional agencies and organizations;
  • Plan tours and other programs/presentations of interest for visitors of all ages, coordinating with participants/speakers including publicity for these events;
  • Perform community outreach functions to enhance the Society’s relationships with the community at large.

In addition, you shall:

  • Assist the Executive Director in the development of exhibitions, public programming, and research publications and also with fundraising efforts and grant proposals;
  • Contribute content for the SFHS social media, website, and newsletter;
  • Conduct tours as needed and assist with programs and events when required;
  • Coordinate the Society’s docents and other program volunteers;
  • Perform other duties as assigned and directed by the Executive Director.

The assistant curator/education coordinator's typical schedule is Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with occasional weekends and evenings as needed.
