Job Description

The Emergency Vehicle Technician II (EVT II) is responsible for the maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of firefighting apparatus, ambulances, and support vehicles. This includes systems such as hydraulics, electrical, engines, pumps, aerial devices, and onboard computers. This is a non-supervisory position that requires independent work, field support, and collaboration with team members.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform routine repairs as directed by the Master Mechanic. Document all repairs in the electronic vehicle maintenance system.
  • Diagnose and repair the district fleet, including fire apparatus and support vehicles, using knowledge of automotive systems such as hydraulics, brakes and air brakes, ABS, gas and diesel engines, advanced electrical and onboard computers, fuel systems, transmissions, air systems, exhausts, axles and suspensions, fire pumps, foam systems, and aerial apparatus. Document all work in the electronic vehicle maintenance system.
  • Diagnose and repair electrical and hydraulic systems, mainline and portable water pumps, water valves, foam generating systems, and generators, following manufacturers' manuals. Document all work in the electronic vehicle maintenance system.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on emergency response and support vehicles, including oil changes and safety checks, according to the preventive maintenance schedule. Document all work in the electronic vehicle maintenance system.
  • Occasionally respond to after-hours emergency calls to repair faulty apparatus, vehicles, and equipment on-site as needed.
  • Perform welding and fabrication of steel and aluminum for body repairs and apparatus refurbishment as needed.
  • Assist with picking up parts and supplies for maintenance and repairs.
  • Conduct annual testing of fire pumps and assist with aerial and ground ladder inspections and testing.
  • Assist in performing and maintaining records for NFPA fire equipment and apparatus tests.
  • Maintain detailed records in an automated system for all maintenance and repairs, including cost of service, service hours, parts used, accident reports, and checklists.
  • Drive apparatus and vehicles to diagnose issues, test repairs, and transport to/from third-party vendors.
  • Train firefighter-engineers on minor equipment repairs, fluid checks, and routine vehicle maintenance to be performed at fire stations.
  • Perform all duties safely, using required safety equipment.
  • Maintain a clean and safe shop and work environment.
  • Operate the mobile maintenance vehicle to perform field maintenance and minor repairs.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with District employees, volunteers, vendors, residents, and other governmental entities.
  • Work independently or assist others as needed.
  • Assist with inventory management, including tracking parts used.
  • Ensure the work environment complies with District safety and environmental standards.
  • Maintain clear, constructive written and verbal communication.
  • Attend required meetings and training sessions.
  • Maintain all required certifications and stay current with emerging technologies relevant to the position.
  • Stay current with applicable NFPA and industry standards.
  • Participate regularly in continuing education and manufacturer training.
  • Work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Provide excellent service to the community.
  • Demonstrate a positive attitude and strong initiative.
  • Promote a professional and positive image of the District at all times.

Qualifications and Certification Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of documented experience in automotive or diesel repair, including emergency vehicle (fire apparatus and ambulance) maintenance; or an equivalent combination of education, certification, and experience.
  • EVT Fire Apparatus Technician Level I Certification (required).
  • EVT Fire Apparatus Technician Level II Certification
  • EVT Ambulance Technician Level I Certification (required).
  • EVT Ambulance Technician Level II Certification
  • Possess personal hand tools necessary to perform the job.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to drive and operate fire apparatus and emergency vehicles for diagnostics and delivery.
  • Skilled in diagnosing and repairing gasoline and diesel internal combustion engines.
  • Skilled in repairing and maintaining electrical and hydraulic systems, water pumps, valves, foam systems, and generators.
  • Knowledge of specialized tools and equipment used in fire apparatus maintenance.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to write basic reports and documentation.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for effective

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • Frequent moderate physical activity required.
  • Work is performed in all weather conditions.
  • Exposure to hazardous and dangerous environments, including:
  • Moving mechanical parts, high places, electrical currents, and confined spaces
  • Hazardous materials, fumes, gases, dust, and odors (PPE required)
  • Must be available for evening, weekend, and holiday work as needed
  • Periods of high mental and emotional stress may occur
  • Must have sensory abilities: hearing, vision (including color), smell, touch, and depth perception
  • Physical capabilities:
  • Frequently lift/move up to 50 lbs to 100 lbs
  • Close vision and ability to adjust focus.
  • Frequent sitting, pushing, pulling, pinching, gripping, overhead reaching, and repetitive motions
  • Regular standing, walking, kneeling, stooping, bending, lifting, and squatting
