Pressure Vessel Subject Matter Expert (SME) – Military & Aerospace-Grade Compressed Gas Cylinders

Location: Valencia, CA (On-site)

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Pressure Vessel Subject Matter Expert (SME) with deep expertise in compressed gas cylinder design, DOT regulations, and military/aerospace-grade pressure vessel manufacturing . This individual will provide technical leadership, ensuring our products meet the highest standards of performance, compliance, and reliability . The SME will also interface directly with customers, supporting existing programs and business development efforts , though the BD team will handle quoting and pricing with input from this role.

Key Responsibilities Engineering & Design
  • Lead the design, analysis, and manufacturing of high-pressure gas cylinders and pressure vessels for military and aerospace applications.
  • Conduct structural, mechanical, and thermal analysis using FEA and advanced engineering tools.
  • Ensure all products meet DOT, MIL-SPEC, and aerospace/defense customer requirements (ASME knowledge is a plus but not required).
  • Optimize materials selection, wall thickness, and stress distribution for high-pressure applications.
  • Review and approve detailed CAD models, engineering drawings, and manufacturing plans .
  • Oversee welding, non-destructive testing (NDT), and quality assurance processes .
  • Provide technical expertise in fabrication, machining, and testing methods for pressure vessels .
Manufacturing & Compliance
  • Drive compliance with DOT, MIL-STD, and other relevant pressure vessel regulations .
  • Monitor fabrication processes, welding techniques, and inspection methods to ensure structural integrity.
  • Support pressure testing, validation, and regulatory certification of compressed gas cylinders.
  • Work closely with Quality and Manufacturing teams to ensure repeatable, high-precision production .
  • Develop and implement best practices for pressure vessel manufacturing and assembly .
Customer & Business Development Support
  • Serve as a technical authority for internal teams and external customers.
  • Interface with customers to translate mission requirements into practical, manufacturable solutions .
  • Provide technical expertise in program meetings, proposal development, and customer reviews .
  • Collaborate with the BD team to assess feasibility and ensure realistic project execution .
  • Represent Applied Companies in industry conferences, technical forums, and regulatory discussions .

You are a highly experienced, results-driven engineer with a deep understanding of pressure vessel design, fabrication, and compliance . You thrive in high-stakes, fast-paced environments where attention to detail and technical rigor are paramount. You take pride in delivering life-saving, military/aerospace-grade products that perform under the most demanding conditions.

Minimum Qualifications
  • 10+ years of experience in pressure vessel design, manufacturing, and regulatory compliance .
  • Expert-level knowledge of DOT, MIL-SPEC, and pressure vessel industry standards (ASME BPVC knowledge is a plus but not required).
  • Hands-on experience with welding, heat treatment, NDT, and quality assurance processes .
  • Strong proficiency in CAD (SolidWorks, AutoCAD) and FEA tools (ANSYS, ABAQUS, NASTRAN, or similar) .
  • Ability to analyze and optimize high-pressure gas storage systems , including Type I and Type III pressure vessels .
  • Experience supporting customer programs, technical reviews, and cross-functional collaboration .
  • Proven track record of leading complex engineering projects from concept through manufacturing.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain security clearance (preferred).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with high-performance materials, composites, and advanced manufacturing techniques .
  • Background in HVAC systems, thermal management, or aerospace pressure vessel applications .
  • Familiarity with Lean Six Sigma, Design for Manufacturability (DFM), and Continuous Improvement .
  • Analytical/scientific programming skills (Python, MATLAB, Excel VBA, etc.).
