Job Description

The City of Newark is seeking a Clean Energy Coordinator to join the Office of Sustainability. This position is an integral role focused in collaboratively developing the City of Newark’s citywide equitable clean energy transition strategy, increasing building energy efficiency and supporting electrification of buildings and vehicles; expanding the use of and access to renewable energy; developing community focused solutions mitigate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and build community resilience to climate change. The Clean Energy Coordinator will work under the supervision of the Chief Sustainability Officer to coordinate between the Office of Sustainability, City departments, and external partners. The role will also support the Office of Sustainability on clean energy initiatives to create a more sustainable and resilient community that protects the natural environment while still promoting sustainable economic growth and addressing the needs of environmental justice (EJ) communities. This position is ideal for a highly professional and team-oriented person with a passion for excellence, and a deep commitment clean energy and a just transition, with experience in community engagement.

Responsibilities:

  1. Serve as a primary liaison for interdepartmental and local, state, and federal partners.
  2. Support the City of Newark with the creation of a clean and renewable energy transition strategy that includes community solar and electrical vehicle infrastructure while incorporating considerations of impacts to EJ communities including high energy burden.
  3. Support the City with the implementation of the Community Energy Plan.
  4. Creating a strategy to manage Newark’s municipal energy portfolio.
  5. Analyze municipal energy bills including utility rates or tariffs to gather historical energy usage data and determine patterns of use to show annual or monthly energy needs.
  6. Support the design and development of energy efficiency and/or clean energy projects, prepare applications for City and State funding programs and lead day-to-day energy efficiency and/or clean energy project management and implementation.
  7. Manage energy project tracking, performance management and reporting and provide technical expertise throughout the overall project lifecycle.
  8. Review and analyze energy audits, manage energy efficiency project scoping, and estimate expected energy savings, cost savings, and emissions reductions.
  9. Manage coordination and communication with internal stakeholders and vendors.
  10. Represent the Office of Sustainability at events and conferences
  11. Support the Office of Sustainability team with their research needs related to clean energy, just transition, climate resilience, workforce development, etc.
  12. Work with Program/Communications Coordinator and the Community Engagement Coordinator to inform and engage the public on climate risks and clean energy
  13. Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s degree with major coursework in electrical, mechanical, environmental, or energy engineering, sustainability, sustainable design, environmental economics, environmental sciences, project management, or a sustainability-related field with 2 years of experience in energy efficiency management, renewable energy development, building management, solar management, fleet management, or closely related fields; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
  2. A good candidate would be able to thrive both in team settings and in independent work, be highly self-motivated, and able to multi-task, organize, plan, and execute
  3. High level of organizational skills with an ability to prioritize, coordinate and manage multiples tasks and projects.
  4. Strong writing, editing, communications and presentation skills
  5. Ability to prioritize, and perform assigned duties with minimal supervision
  6. Commitment to environmental sustainability, EJ, and community engagement
  7. Understanding and consideration of the experiences of residents in EJ communities
  8. Ability to communicate about clean energy and climate issues and data to a wide variety of audiences, such as municipal staff, state agencies, community groups, the public, and elected and appointed officials.

Preferred qualifications:

  1. Experience managing complex projects and coordinating with internal and external parties;
  2. Working knowledge and interest in energy markets, offshore wind, and state government functions;
  3. Experience writing policy memos, preparing slide decks, or other materials communicating complex concepts or technical information;
  4. Experience communicating complex issues to a broad range of stakeholders and decisionmakers.

Office conditions:

The candidate would work in the Office of Sustainability’s office in City Hall.

Compensation and Benefits:

The position is a grant-funded part-time position for a 12-month period with the possible option to extend. Hourly rate will be $30-$35/hour, depending on experience. This position does not include benefits nor would holiday pay be included.
